anime review “I Parry Everything”

As the spring anime season ends and we begin to feel a bit lonely, the summer anime season is starting up. I’m thrilled that the second season of my favorite series, “Oshi no Ko,” has finally begun!
With so many new titles that I’m not familiar with, it’s hard to decide what to watch.

As I was looking through the summer anime titles, I couldn’t help but shout, “Ah! It’s Parry!”

The anime “I Parry Everything” is based on a novel that won first place in the annual ranking on “Shousetsuka ni Narou”. The original story was so interesting that I knew it was going to be adapted into an anime, but I had forgotten when it would start airing. 😅

I quickly watched the trailer on Hulu. The artwork is beautiful, and it looks like the main story will meet my expectations too! 🙌

Now, let me write from memory. I watch so many different series that my memories might get jumbled up, so forgive me if they do. 🙏

A boy named Noel, who lost his parents, left his familiar mountain home to become an adventurer, inspired by his admiration for heroes. When he tried to register as an adventurer at the guild, he was turned away because he lacked any skills. To acquire skills, he was told he needed to undergo vocational training (if I remember correctly).

There are six professions such as swordsman and magician. Noel tried his best in each training course but couldn’t produce any significant results. He only acquired the lowest rank skills in each profession.

Disheartened, Noel returned to the mountain after being deemed unsuitable for any adventurer profession. However, he didn’t give up on his dream. He decided to rigorously train his parrying skill, hoping that by mastering it, he could someday acquire higher-ranked skills and become a swordsman.

Here, let me explain what “parry” means. I didn’t understand it when I first read the original story, so I looked it up. It refers to a skill where a swordsman blocks and deflects an opponent’s attack with a sword. It’s also called “parry” in sports like fencing.

Noel trained daily, deflecting sticks hung in the air with a wooden sword. His shouts of “Parry! Parry!” echoed through the mountain. As he increased the number of sticks until he could deflect a thousand at once, he was no longer a young man but approaching thirty.

Determined to pursue his dream of becoming an adventurer once more, Noel headed back to town.

When he told the guild about his skill, he was told he couldn’t even qualify for the minimum E rank. However, he learned that there was an F rank below E, and as long as he could become an adventurer, he was happy. Finally, Noel started his journey as an adventurer.

As an F rank, he couldn’t venture outside the town and could only take on tasks like cleaning sewers and carrying goods within the town. Still, Noel was happy to help people as an adventurer and worked earnestly, even for low rewards. Gradually, the townspeople began to appreciate and trust him.

One day, while working at a construction site, a giant bipedal cow appeared. The soldiers fought to protect a girl but were overpowered one by one by the cow’s strength.

To save the girl, Noel jumped in front of her and deflected the giant cow’s axe with a “Parry!” Although Noel’s skill allowed him to deflect the attacks, he couldn’t defeat the giant cow. Calmly, he continued to parry each blow until the deflected axe finally struck the cow, defeating it.

This led to the first misunderstanding. Believing he was weak and unable to become more than an F-rank adventurer with minimal skills, Noel felt ashamed for struggling so much against what he thought was just a cow.

In reality, the creature he fought was a Minotaur, a powerful monster usually found deep within labyrinths. Unbeknownst to Noel, his relentless training of the parry skill had made him the strongest adventurer, yet his humility and low self-esteem meant he continued to misunderstand his own strength.

This reverse misunderstanding and Noel’s calm demeanor as he fights while shouting “Parry! Parry!” are part of what makes this series gradually amusing. His natural cluelessness, like using a sword given by the king to clean sewers, adds to the charm. If you’re interested, let’s watch it together! 😆
